10th Degree Judo
The martial arts style of judo has been practiced worldwide by a ton of people. The pensioner from Edinburgh became the first Scot and only the fifth non-Japanese to achieve a 10th dan in judo, the art’s highest honor. Around 1930 Jigoro Kano created a new belt to recognize the special achievements of high ranking black belts. The sheer amount of practitioners over the years is one of the things that make Scotland’s George Kerr’s recent achievement so impressive. Achievement in Judo is recognized by a series of ranks. A more traditional method of recognizing achievement was the presentation of certificates or scrolls, often with the secrets of the school inscribed.
