Central Rice Research Institute
Introduction
The Central Rice Research Institute (Dhan Gaveshna Kendra in Oriya) is placed near Vidyadharpur village on the Cuttack-Paradip Road, Orissa, India. It is one of the prime national research institutes beneath the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI) was launched by the Government of India in 1946 at Cuttack in Orissa. The main aim is to conduct research to raise productiveness and property of rice. CRRI is about 35 km from Biju Patnaik Airport and 7 km from Cuttack Railway Station, on the Cuttack-Paradip state highway.
Organization
The research institute is separate into several sections, each led by a Departmental Head. Since the execution of the Gajendragadkar Commission report, working circumstances (in terms of pay) bettered greatly for the research scientists. Most of the scientists stay in houses in the campus.
Achievements
In team events, CRRI gained gold medals in 4 x 100 m relay race and Kabaddi, single gold medals in 100 m, 200 m, 400 m and 800 m, and silver medals in 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m race and choose Best All-rounder (men) of the tournament winning six gold medals in 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m race in individual events and team gold in 4 x 100 m relay race and Kabaddi.
Facilities at Institute
The observational farm 117 hectares have a cultivated land of 60.5 hectares. The farm is divided into 15 blocks with well bunded and leveled plots for area experimentations in dissimilar rice ecologies. A plot of 0.8 hectare has been varied to grow an eco-friendly sustainable fish-farming system to help rice farmers of rainfed intermediate and semi-deep lands. An administrative –cum- laboratory block, an engineering complex, a farm division complex and an annex of gene bank to defend 12 research divisions/sections.
