The City and Industrial growth Corporation of Maharashtra or CIDCO is a city planning organization made by the Government of Maharashtra. CIDCO was formed on 17 March 1970 under the Indian Companies Act of 1956. Its aim at the time of its launching was to develop a satellite town to Mumbai, Maharashtra India to ease traffic congestion in the city and provide open spaces, playing fields, housing and industrial positions outside the city. Development remarks could not keep pace with the quickly arising population, business, trade and commerce. Besides, there were physical limitations to the growth of the city built on long and narrow peninsula, which had very few connections with the mainland. Organization
The corporation is controlled by a board of directors appointed by the state government. Day-to-day management is provided by the vice chairman and managing director supported by a team of joint managing directors, made up of the chief administrator (New Towns), the heads of various departments and personnel from various technical and non-technical disciplines, including officers, engineers and subordinate staff.
Objectives
CIDCO was given an authorization to attempt all development as works and recoup the cost of growth from the sale continues of land and constructed property. Based on the mandate, CIDCO set several broad aims for itself. It aims to prevent population influx into Mumbai, diverting it to the new town, by providing an urban alternative which will lure citizens wishing to relocate to a city of peace and comfort. Immigrants are to be engaged from other states and efficient and rational distribution of industries is promoted by preparing a ground for them who otherwise could have opted for Mumbai. CIDCO plans to provide basic civic amenities to all and elevate standards of living for people of all social and economic strata. Moreover, it wants to offer a healthy surroundings and stimulating condition in order to utilize human resources at their fullest potentials.
Course of action
In order to achieve these goals, CIDCO started to formulate land and provide the required physical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, drainage and sewerage system, drinking water system and street lights. It has built a stock of houses supported by social infrastructure such as community centres, markets, parks, education institutes and playgrounds. It promotes commercial activities, warehousing, transportation and decentralization of government administration. Lastly, it involves agencies in the development of public transport and telecommunication.
Mission
CIDCO’s corporate activity is to plan and create environment-friendly, model urban settlements with fully fledged physical and social infrastructure to meet residential, commercial and industrial need of population at present and in the years to come.
