Cold days are evaluated in heating degree-days. The number of degrees that a day’s moderate temperature is above 65o Fahrenheit and people start to use air conditioning to cool their buildings. By consider degree-day practice in your area, you can evaluate the increases or amount in your heating or air-specify bills from year to year. Hot days, which may require the use of energy for cooling, are evaluate in cooling degree-days. On a day with a mean temperature of 80 degrees F, for example, 15 cooling degree-days would be recorded (80 – 65 base = 15 CDD). The agreement price for a weather futures contract is calculated by summing a month’s CDD values and multiplying by $20. The price of weather differential trading in the summer are based on an index made up of serial cooling degree day (CDD) values.
