The Forest Research Institute was consulted with the status of a Deemed to be University in December 1991 by the Government of India. Dept. of Education, Govt. of India Dated 6th December, 1991 the Forest Research Institute-dehradun shall be held to be a University Published in Gazette of India. Being the first and only University of the country administrating research dedicated exclusively to Forestry. The Director General of ICFRE is the Chancellor and Director FRI Vice Chancellor of the University.
