Introduction
The Geological Survey of India (GSI), the second oldest survey in the nation was founded in I85l with the singular aim to settle coal for the railways. This system was founded for the purpose of carrying on studies on earth science in the sub continent fields. Currently the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is having force of almost 2100 geoscientists and technical professionals.

Geological Survey of India Objectives
- To play proactive part in natural and anthropogenic hazard judgment and mitigation
- To found and maintain a comprehensive earth science database
- Intensive and extensive exploration to discover, assess and grow natural resources
Activity Thrust Areas
- The thrust areas of GSI’s actions have developed with the changing national priorities during the successive Five Year Plans.
- The principal thrust of GSI in the mineral exploration would remain on noble metals, precious stone, base metal, coal and lignite.
Modernization
The Geological Survey of India has attempted an extensive program of modernisation during X Plan period on the proposal of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industries, and as per guidelines laid down by an Expert Board on Modernisation of GSI, appointed by the Dept. of Mines.

To continuously update geological database of the land and offshore fields
To map the area in progressively larger scale and commensurate with changing conceptions
To discover, assess and augment natural resources through intensive and extensive exploration
To understand active geological processes affecting man and his environment
To generate databases in the fields of environment, water resource development, natural hazards, etc.
To play proactive role in natural and anthropogenic hazard assessment and mitigation
To monitor past, present and future demands for natural resources and reorient activities accordingly
