Introduction
Government Medical College, Jammu, a prime institute of J&K was began in the year, 1973 in a irregular building with the aim to render quality education and deliver the health care service to the people of this region. This institution is located in the heart of Temple City Jammu. This institution was begun with the intention to train 50 medical students for MBBS course per year and to serve as referral hospital for Jammu Province.
Government Medical College offers 5.5 years bachelor’s degree courses in MBBS. Admission to this course is made through a merit list prepared on the basis of the score of the candidates in the Common Entrance Test.

There are 2 licensed Blood Banks in the Government Medical College, Jammu .One is in GMCH and another is in SMGS .These Blood Bank are very well equipped and have the facilities of preparing the components. These Blood Banks are catering to the needs of the entire Medical & surgical Specialties of Government Medical College and Associated Hospitals.

There are two Libraries; one is the primary Library also known as the Central Library which is located on the first floor near the Principal Office in Government Medical College. One small Library is also introduce in SMGS Hospital whereas each Department is also keeping a Departmental library for the gain of UG, PG students as well as the staff members
