IIT Roorkee is one of the top engineering institutes of the world. The institute was constituted in 1847 by the Britishers as Thomason college of Civil Engineering. The institute was rechristened as University of Roorkee in 1949 and was given the position of the First Engineering University of Independent India. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has played a crucial role in research and in furnishing technical manpower and expertise to the nation. On September 21, 2001, the Government of India issued an ordinance and declared the institute as the nation’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology.
