Introduction
Jawaharlal Institute of PG Medical Education and Research observes its source to 1823 when a medical school says “Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery” was launched by French government. In 1956 the Govt. of India receives over the medical college in the wake of the ‘de facto’ move of Pondichery. The college was attributing as a Regional Centre and named as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on 13th July 1964. Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research and is related to the Pondichery University and operate a number of medical and paramedical courses.

Eligibility
Applicant must be a resident Indian National. Minimum of M.B.B.S. Degree recognized by the Medical Council of India. Must have either finished the required period of 12 months pre-registration Internship from a established hospital on or before 31st March 2010.Finished Application must reach JIPMER on or before the prescribed closing date (i.e.) 31-12-2009.
Admission Procedure
Candidates to the several courses offered at JIPMER are selected based on an entrance examination followed by an interview. Entrance examinations are held once a year and calls for applications are announced in all major newspapers in India as well as on the official website.

The Library at the Medical College, Pondicherry started functioning at the erstwhile Medical College Buildings at Pondicherry from 1957. It was shifted to the Banting Hall, JIPMER in the year 1964. The Central Library was finally shifted to the present centrally air-conditioned building and started functioning from January 12, 1973.
