National Institute of Mental Health Schizophrenia
The mission of NIMH is to transmute the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses by basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery and cure. For the Institute to continue fulfilling this vital public health mission, it must further innovative thinking and ensure that a full array of novel scientific perspectives are used to further discovery in the evolving science of mind, behavior, and experience. In this way, breakthroughs in science can become breakthroughs for all individuals with mental illnesses.

Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a chronic, intense, and disabling mind disorder that impacts about 1.1 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year. Individuals with schizophrenia sometimes hear voices others don’t hear, believe that others are broadcasting their ideas to the world, or become convinced that others are plotting to harm them. These experiences can make them fearful and withdrawn and cause troubles when they attempt to have relationships with others.

Signs & Symptoms
Symptoms usually grow in men in their late teens or early twenties and women in the twenties and thirties, but in rare cases, can perform in childhood. They can admit hallucinations, delusions, disordered thinking, movement disorders, flat affect, social withdrawal, and cognitive deficits

Treatment
This is a time of promise for individuals with schizophrenia. Though the causes of the illness have not yet been found out, current treatments can eliminate many of the symptoms and allow individuals with schizophrenia to live independent and fulfilling lives in the community
