National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, once famous as Regional Engineering College Rourkela, was launched in 1961 as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Orissa. Owing to its contribution for furnishing caliber teaching in the area of Engineering, Science and Technology, NIT Rourkela was accorded the position of Deemed University and renamed as National Institute of Technology Rourkela in 2002.
