Aliah Madrasah was launched in 1780 by the first Governor General of India, Warren Hastings, who named it Mohammedan College of Calcutta. Aliah University has with it the rich inheritance of Madrasah-i-Aliah or Calcutta Madrasah. It was introduced by Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, on April 5, 2008.The University started its academic session in the year 2008-2009.The University is in the course of finding land for the organization of a straggling modern campus.
