The Bharathiar University was founded at Coimbatore through the Government of Tamilnadu in February, 1982.The Ph.D. program is furnished in the department right from its inception. Regularly about 15 to 20 students apply for Phd program for acadmic year 2011. The Department of Physics is one of the earliest departments in this University. This department was began in the year 1974 through the University of Madras as PG study center and afterward in the year 1982 later the institution of Bharathiar University through Tamilnadu Government, this department became the Department of Physics of Bharathiar University.

Students passed with 55% Marks and over in the PG degree in the concerned or related to subject and with or without M.Phil. Degree programme; For SC/ST students, 50% marks in P.G. program is sufficient.
