The institution of an Engineering college at Roorkee was proposed to the Honorable James Thomason, Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Provinces, about 1846, by Colonel Cautley of the Royal Artillery, who had been Superintendent-General of Canals since 1836 and was busily engaged in the scheme, first pondered by Colonel Colvin of the Bengal Engineers, for the employment of the waters of the Ganges for irrigation. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination distributed and carried on jointly via the Indian Institute of Science and 7Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Section of superior learning, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt of India.
