Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is one of the prime institutions founded in 1959 by the Government of India financed by Ministry of Human Resource and Development. The intention of the Institute is to offer significant education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological invention for the industrial development of the nation. It ranks among the top 20 technology institutes of the nation.
The Institute now has its have residential campus disseminated above 1200 acres of land, approximately 2506 undergraduate and 1516 postgraduate students, 326 faculty members and more than 900 assisting staff. The merged record of its past and present faculty and students along with the alumni disseminated throughout the world is awe-inspiring. Under the guidance of eminent economist John Kenneth Galbraith, IIT Kanpur was the first institute in India to begin Computer Science education.
