The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority was founded on 19/04/2000 under Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 1999 with its central office at New Delhi. In the year December 2001 The Authority has moved its central office to Hyderabad.
Insurance Industry has offices in twelve cities. Each office is empowered to redress client grievances in esteem of insurance contracts on personal lines where the insured amount is less than Rs. 20 lacs, in accordance with the ombudsman Scheme.
The Authority was to consist of a president, 5 regular Members and 4 Part-time Members. As on date the Authority has 1 president, 2 regular and 4 part time members. Advisory Committee, which assists the Authority in creating its Rules and Regulations for proper discharge of its activities.
operate and regulation of the rates, benefits, terms and conditions that may be provided through insurers in respect of general insurance business not so operated and regulated through the Tariff Advisory Committee under section 64U of the Insurance Act, 1938 (4 of 1938).
