Obama Graduation Speech

President Obama communicated the beginning address at Hampton University in Virginia, and in a weirdly out-of-touch moment for a President, who opposed to keep his Blackberry, told the crowd of graduates that “with iPods and iPads and XBoxes and PlayStations, information becomes confusion, a diversion, a form of entertainment, instead than a tool of authorization. Obama’s speech was the prize in the Race to the Top beginning Challenge. He told students, along with 5,000 other people carried into the basketball arena at Western Michigan University, to work hard and think of others.

Much of the speech was profound and penetrating social criticism. Moral and spiritual development must be adequate to the challenges of new technology. This is an accuracy that became apparent with the advent of television and radio, inventions that have arguably fallen far short of their potential. A grim example of technology being commandeered for bent ends is the use of ultrasound technology for gender selection of the unborn rather than recognizing its usefulness in healing. President Obama observed the new information technology such as the iPad and Twitter as inventions that have been used to waste time rather than broaden collective discourse and individual striving. The idea that its modern media landscape should be filtered and supervised by their government is a pernicious doctrine, one that should be fought and repudiated.
