Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), once recognized as Indian Photo-Interpretation Institute (IPI), was found in 1966 below the aegis of the Survey of India to provide broad training with passes on experience of the emerging technology. The Research and Development of remote sensing and GIS techniques and their applications are some of the throw area activities at IIRS. This is being fulfilled by Ph.D. programs. The institute is realized as a research centre of Forest Research Institute University Dehradun. Geoinformatics technology and its applications are listed subjects for Ph.D. degree. The institute is also connected to Pune University, Pune in eight subjects.
