TISS was founded in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. The first school of social work in India, TISS was a opening up effort, characteristic of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT). While responding to the changing needs of the social and educational system in the nation, the Institute has gone far beyond the initial concern of social work teaching. Thus, what began as a small institution providing a post-graduate diploma in Social Work grew into Deemed University and, as a result, diversified its activities

TISS 2010 Eligibility
Candidates applying for the M.A. /M.Sc. in Habitat Policy and Practice should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Management, Physical Sciences Geography, Planning, Law, or Social Sciences, with some inclination towards habitat-related issues/sectors. Professionals working in different sub-sectors of the habitat sector or the urban sector are also eligible, furnished they possess the lower limit academic qualifications. They could come from different types of institutions, admitting ULBs, government, research organizations, civil society groups, and private companies are also eligible for TISS 2010 Admission to the programme.Apart from the minimum academic qualifications, proficiency in written and spoken English and basic capabilities in mathematics would be desirable and helpful to students in making best of what the programme offers.
