The University of Calcutta was founded by an Act of the Legislative Council (Act No II of 1857) of the then British India. A subsidiary Act endowing the University to confer some additional degrees was extended in 1860. Another Act was passed by in 1884 by which the University was authorized to award honorary Degree of Law. The University Act of 1904 authorized the University to make essential arrangements for the instruction of students, and by most of the teaching extended to be contributed in the associated colleges, teaching in some of the higher branches commenced to be organized under the University management.
Calcutta University has 65 departments coordinated into 8 faculties: Agriculture; Arts; Commerce, Social Welfare & Business Management; Education, Journalism and Library Science; Engineering & Technology; Fine Arts, Music and Home Science; Law and Science.
