The Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 and is accepted by the University Grant Commission (India). Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) was constituted in 14 June 1997 near the West Bengal and Sikkim border. It is a subdivision of the Manipal University in Manipal, Karnataka. The engineering college has its own campus at Majitar, Rangpo, near the West Bengal and Sikkim border. The Institute pulls students from all over the country, with over 1700 students entered in the several engineering disciplines.

Events
The annual youth festival of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology is one of the prime youth pointed events of the area. Every year, the students prepare their annual Inter College Festival, KAALRAV. The sight of KAALRAV, as the name means, the “Voice of Time”, is to present the ever-changing face of life and time.
