In the year of 1982 the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Srinagar was establish by an Act passed through the State Legislature. The university named after great patriotic leader Jenab Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah (popularly famous as Sher-e-Kashmir). SKUAST main campus situated at Shalimar in Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir state.
The University operates on the Land Grant College concept of USA following the Model Act of State Agricultural Universities evolved through the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. With the university Act in force, the agricultural education, research and extension training units were transferred to SKUAST from several growth sections viz; Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Sheep Husbandry and Sericulture of Jammu & Kashmir State.
Agriculture, Veterinary, Fisheries and related sciences are taught here as important stream courses. The parent Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology was renamed as Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K).

The admissions of scholars to different curricula are made strictly according to the provisions of the Academic Regulations of the university and amended from time to time taking into considerations the guidelines/norms dictated through the state Govt. and the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR). The admission of scholars to various curricula is made according to the reservation rules of seats to various categories.
